Red Hand Day - dia 12 de Fevereiro

O Red Hand Day é um evento simbólico, realizado a nível mundial, que tem como objectivo alertar para a situação das crianças-soldado. Comemora-se todos os anos, no dia 12 de Fevereiro, para assinalar a entrada em vigor, em 2002, do Protocolo Facultativo à Convenção sobre os Direitos da Criança, que proibiu a utilização de crianças com menos de 18 anos em conflitos armados.

PROPOSTA ÀS ESCOLAS

As Nações Unidas estimam que existam cerca de 250 mil crianças utilizadas em guerras num total de 20 países ou territórios. Assim, é necessário dar continuidade aos protestos, para que a Convenção seja efectivamente respeitada e o flagelo das crianças-soldado termine. O símbolo de o Red Hand Day é uma mão vermelha, com uma criança-soldado a branco, que é utilizada nas diversas manifestações deste evento: demonstrações públicas, exposições, protestos.

A Amnistia Internacional Portugal propõe às escolas portuguesas que se associem à iniciativa, desenvolvendo a actividade que propõe em anexo. Apesar do dia 12 de Fevereiro concentrar uma multiplicidade de actividades contra o uso de crianças-soldado, esta acção pode ser desenvolvida nas próximas semanas.

A Amnistia Internacional Portugal - Grupo 19 abraça também esta iniciativa e convida as escolas do Concelho de Sintra a participarem nela.

Your Excellency:

I am writing on behalf of students at the [NOME DA ESCOLA OU GRUPO] in [CIDADE E PAÍS]. We are very concerned about the continued recruitment and use of child soldiers around the world. To help end this horrible practice, we respectfully urge your government to ratify as soon as possible the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict.

The ratification of this important protocol by your Government can send a powerful message to other governments who still use child soldiers in conflicts around the world, to follow your example.

Child soldiers are fighting in at least 14 conflicts around the world. They are often recruited through force or deception, and exposed to horrific violence. They may begin as messengers or porters, but too often end up on the front lines of combat. Some are forced to commit atrocities and many girls are sexually exploited. They are denied an education and robbed of their childhood. Many do not survive.

2010 was the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the Optional Protocol by the United Nations General Assembly. To date, 131 countries around the world have ratified this important treaty, which prohibits the forced recruitment of children under the age of 18 or their participation in hostilities. We would like to see every country in the world ratify the optional protocol, and have enclosed red hands that we have made to express our desire to stop the use of child soldiers anywhere in the world.

We ask you to use your influence to ensure that your government ratifies the optional protocol and makes clear its firm commitment to end the use of child soldiers in every conflict, persuading other governments to do so.
